"Inventor" of the World Wide Web Knighted

The father of the World Wide Web has had his contribution to world communication recognised by being knighted at Buckingham Palace by the Queen.

Tim Berners-Lee invented the "information superhighway" whilst working at the European Particle Physics Laboratory CERN, near Geneva. He developed it from an idea and gave it away in 1991 on the Internet.

It was his program that led to the prefix www on web addresses used around the globe and used by millions of people every day.

Sir Tim said that he was "very honoured" to receive the accolade and pleased to be able to visit the Palace!
